Ship Name=USS Honolulu

Sailor=Donald E Taylor Service Dates=1938-1958 A Relation=father R.

Donald E Taylor retired as a Chief Radioman in 1958. He was aboard the U.S.S. Honolulu when she sustained damage at Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7th, 1941. On that day, a message was sent 'in the clear' from Ft. Shafter indicating Pearl Harbor was under attack. The message was recieved by Cpl. Avis M. Kermonde, WRAAF at Victoria Barracks, Melbourne, Australia. When Don went to Australia as a part of the Admiral's Headquarters, Don was a cryptographer and the two met. They married and were together until his death in 1999. He suffered from cancer attributed to participating atomic tests at the end of the war. Avis accompanied Don to Canberra, Brisbane, the U.S.,Japan, Morocco and wherever he was stationed. She lives in Melbourne today (Nov '01)
