THIS MONTH IN NAVAL HISTORY
April 5th 1776- An American fleet under the command of Esek Hopkins intercepts a small fleet of British ships. The Americans capture the British schooner HMS Hawk and the Bomb Brigane Bolton
April 24th 1778- John Paul Jones captures the British vessel Drake off the coast of Northern Ireland. The British Captain George Burdon was killed in the engagement. The Drake is the first major warship of that the Americans captured in the war.
April 2nd 1781- The USS Alliance under the command of John Barry was attacked by British privateers. The Alliance captures the British ship the Mars
April 29th 1812- The USS Essex commanded by Captain Porter seized two English vessels in the Indian Ocean.
April 29th 1814- The USS Peacock captures the British shipJuly 5, 1942- The USS Growler SS-215 sinks the Japanese destroyer Garare in Kiska in the Aleutians
July 13th 1942 The German submarine U-153 is sunk by the USS Lansdowne off the coast of Panama
July 1st 1943- The USS Radford (DD-446) sinks the Japanese submarine RO-101 off the Solomon Islands
